Bornholm has that atomsphere about it. That feel that most islands have but is extremely hard to define. One that I treasure, that I’ve felt on the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly and all those little French Isles off the West coast of France. It is a sort of laid-back mañana small town community thing mixed with an understanding of isolation but everything in close proximity. Anyway, a very lovely place, so far. The Danes, like those parts of Croatia that I’ve been to, are keen on the place being clean and tidy. A big plus for me.
The Balka Strand. Feels like a summer camp sort of place.Balka beach which will mark the finish once I’ve gotten all the way around.Instead of the travelling chicken I’m met with slew of other characters. First there was pheasant. Then …Duck. Geese of various sorts flying overhead and an eagle landing to prey in the field beside me. By the time I had my phone out etc. long gone. Insects are buzzing and small birds in the trees are chirping – lovely.Nexo Havn. Looking for coffee.Waited to long and now have none. Carved posts in the park on the outskirts. The coast is low scrub and rocky not too much upz and downz which is very pleasant after my very hairy trip to Gran Canaria. The stones are not original having been raised on the mound of an old gun battery.A nesting swan. Not something you see everyday. The view back towards Nexo. These strange pyramidal chimneys are the remains of smokehouses. Lodas of them all over and of course many are still active for they love da fish,Aarsdale, and the Google letting me down as to opening times.Giant turtle has her eyes closed ‘cos the kids kicked sand at her.The wild Danish coastal horse. The lighthouse on the head of the bay to Svaneke. Now an AirBnB.A real boat for the kids to play in at the playground. Note the white sand. All the beachs are very white. The quartz in the granite that the island is made from. The Pontipines and The Wottingers slug it out in the Night Garden derby here using these tiny goals. The low hills and coast of tomorrow’s trip. What strange lost people carved the hand and wirst of their God in this boulder?Such a jump to the high-tech society lynching their mechanical men.Listed Havn. The only place open charged me £12 for a coffee and bun – it was a goldsmith’s though.
A lovely day and it is a nice change to have the app say twelve miles and to have actually only done that instead of the extras that steep gradients add on. The coast feels very familiar, like the Ards Penninsual with Viking playing in the background. The weather was good and, of course, my personal chauffeurs, Esme and Aurora make the travel to and fro easy-peasy.
