Bornholm – 4

Hammerhavn to Hotel Skovly – 5th May 2025

After yesterday’s wind and rain the sunshine today was a blessing. I had thought to leave the wind behind but it had veered to the west and was still blowing in my face all day. No matter, the rain stayed away and I stayed dry.
Low cliffs for the first two hours and then the glorious blooming coastal forest for the rest.

Hammerhavn with the castle – the Hammerhus on the cliff top.
Even fifty years ago, the native pink granite was still being quarried and shipped from here.
I can avoid the crowds – about three people – and go around the castle.
That would be Vang below. Nothing much open on Monday or Tuesday on this island so stops will be limited.
I am constantly surprised at the young forest. They must have a started planting twenty or thrity years ago, way ahead of the fervour in the UK.
A handy stair down the cliff face, though I wouldn’t like to have tried it yesterday in the wet.
Down to the bouldered beach for the run in to Vang.
A tiny little water mill in the forest.
And a very handy bridge over the gorge. I just wish that they handn’t put holes in the treads.
The mountain lake behind the bridge.
Down to the coast again at Teglkås. This remainds me very much of the Isle of Man.
I’ve looked and can not find a rune set to decipher. Perhaps when I’ve more time.
The crane waiting patiently for the young fish to come out from the seaweed.
Hasle, and the awful harbour front apartments. In the distance the giant wind turbines awaiting assembly at Rønne. Not a coffee to be had.
Normally you’d think grain storage but I just don’t know.
Klympen Strand and the wind turbines more clearly.
This area is strange, likely fossilised sand dunes. Hard underfoot like dried mud.
Again with the young costal forest in bloom. The pines are much older but have been interplanted to help preserve the land from erosion.
The beach to Rønne. I’m off to the left to the hotel and pick up.

The sun shone and though the wind still had a bit of winter chill to it, I felt great. At least I did right up until I had to do the last 1K on the soft sand, which for some reason did me in. Never mind, tomorrow should be a softer day.
