Isles of Scilly – 1

St. Mary’s – 17th September 2024

A late start because I didn’t get here until nearly one o’clock but no matter, heading anticlockwise around the island so that I can avoid all the peeps doing it the recommended way.

A shot of Penzance harbour. It’s been forty years since I was here – sigh!
The harbour at Hugh Town, St. Mary’s. The ferry is across the way. Wasn’t bouncy at all, bloody stupid old women.
Porthmellon Beach and I’m stopping for coffee already, no brekky or lunch.
It should stay dry and sunny. Just realised that I’ve forgotten my hat! Stupid old goat.
Tresco and Bryher. Looks like I can’t get a boat tomorrow to Bryher so I’ll just go to Tresco and see if I can get a lift over at some point.
Ancient village. Loads of stone stuff on the Scillys.
The stone pyramids (not man made).
Lovely firm track between the ferns for a bit.
Might as well have a look since it’s on the way. St. Martin’s over the channel.
There ya go some gen.
Lower tomb.
Upper tomb. You do wonder about who these people were.
More gen. I’m trying to do all five main islands.
As before somewhere in Wales, I think, a donation box in the middle of nowhere.
Pelistry Beach. Some strange sea creature has dragged itself from the briny deep to terrorise the locals. All their footsteps running away from its weird three limbness.
First name Silly.
Just had another coffee and imma buzzing. Too much on an empty stomach. I think that its an elephant sitting on its haunches with George Washington trapped under its trunk.
Porth Hellick and the fickle finger of fate.
Reminds me of the Costa Brava, the path through the pines in the dappled sunlight.
The wild Celtic sea off this south-eastern tip.
Apparently the only traffic light on the island. It is flashing green but the shot doesn’t pick it up.

I’ll just tiptoe past while they are busy elsewhere.
Porth Minick and about an hour to go.
There it is, my ride back in a few days. Took off very fast in about a hundred metres seemed like.
The stone turtle is crawling out to dive off that natural board.
I think the one on the right is the pope in his mitre.
This one is like a sea creature. You can see how our ancestors thought these woven by the Gods and worth emulating.
Proper recycling. A Gemini space capsule sent from the US of A and turned into a lighthouse.
I’m loving all these weather carved granite outcrops.
Last one, I promise. I’ve got two frogs standing on their hind legs facing each other and kissing.
Old Town bay and just the fort to go after.
One of these ducks is not like the others and one has come out and identified as a duck though she is fucking not a duck.
On the beach at Old Town.
OK a dwarf door into the mountain.
Thankfully only a short tunnel and I’m out onto the battlements.
I doubt that those guns fit the place.
Leaving the gun emplacements behind at last.
Can’t but hum the national anthem in honour of Cora and her feeling for the UJ.
The town bell and I’m done.

St Mary’s, very lovely and despite the crowds on the ferry and thronging the harbour, I met very few on my walk. Just pissed at all the LDN overloud fuckwits spoiling my hotel.
