Fuerteventura – 1

Carralejo to La Olvia – 18th February 2025

Am I any weaker a year on from the last Canary Island trip? I don’t feel so, though I am now offically a pensioner – not that I’m going to get to retire any time soon.
I happen to be blessed this trip with two helpers, Esme as my driver, ably assisted by Aurora who, by any measure, is the boss. Much help they are indeedy removing the need to get buses and the worry that the last one will be missed on a long trip.

Leaving Carralejo and I obviously missed the gorilla wrestling. Is the rusted guy lying at the bottom right supposed to represent the drunken English?
The first volcano and the road is wide and flat, though the wind is a bitch.
I’ve made a poor start. First I went left instead of right ‘cos I was distracted by being on the phone, then I’ve climbed a hill that didn’t need climbing.
Carralejo down below and Lanzarote across the sound.
Tempted to get out of the wind for a bit but must press on, going to be close to darkness by the time I’m done at the moment.
The Fuerteventuran volcano goat. Once they reach maturity they self-immolate in the caldera and cook ready for collection.
That is them up there.
At first I thought. Why is that monkey in the field?
The entrance to the Finco adveristing the volcano goat. Don’t quite think they need to cage that one in.
Lajares below and this sort of touristy path is for the peeps to easily get into the caldera of a volcano. Dozens of ground squirrels around feeding on the crap they leave.
Heading towards the sort of broken one in the centre after some reviving coffee.
For those tourists that can not fathom a walk.
Back across the valley at the path below the hills into Lajares.
Another few miles of wide flat road rising to the foothills of the one ahead.
And then a left turn to this one.
Lajares in the valley below.

A timely and much needed break from the wind.
Windmills – useful.
La Olivia and I can just see the square blocky tower of the church which is the end for today.

Hard first day, which is never good, and the wind was very bad. Climbing a lot tomorrow so I expect much of the same.
