Bakkerne Havn to Balka Strand – 8th May 2025

The sun shone again today and it was only necessary to leave the beach to find coffee and a sit down for a few minutes. As usual, a riot of sea-birds with swans in profusion today. The water glistened with the sun and the tide gave me a hard edge to tramp along.

The first bevy of swans coming out of the low morning sun.
Leaving Bakkerne Havn.
The other side having a confab before taking to sea.
Øster Sømarken strand heading east.
Round the point and it just goes on. Though I can see the tower in the distance.
Dead pine trees washed from the bank.
Many more this side. A big cycle. The waves and the wind build the dunes which get colonised by grasses. The sea retreats and the pines move in. The sea comes back and takes the pines, the grass and the dunes again.
Should be a camp site café at the base of that tower so, heading inland for a bit.
It is so white it is like a snowscape.
Back out to the beach.
You can see why this is the place to camp. Large beach with no rocks or seaweed and a gentle slope to a swallows.
A lot of these brown and whtie ducks abound, usually in pairs. Get on with it mate!
I think shelduck.
Finally made it to the end of Dueodde beach.
Balka approaches with Nexos across on the far point.
The last beach, Balka Strand.
Bornhom finished face.

If ever you were thinking about starting island walks you’d do no better than to start here. OK it might spoil you for everywhere else but it is a truely lovely place. You can go as the guide book says or make your own route as I did. I am glad that I changed mine to give me the last two days on the beach with the tide at my feet and the sun dappling the waves.
